Weekend did NOT go how I planned

My weekend wasn’t terrible in any way, although part of it was admittedly disappointing. I got to spend the weekend by myself, because my mom was watching the Piano Guys with her cousin in another city. That meant I got to spend all of Friday alone, and then most of Saturday. It would’ve been nice if I went off Reno’s schedule, because then I would’ve been on fall break so I wouldn’t have any school on Friday. Then I’d be able to enjoy my days off to their full extent.

In any event, it was still a mostly successful weekend. I had to finish a project for my teammates after school because they are terrible partners, so that wasn’t very fun. They didn’t even bother to find a way to communicate with me over the weekend, so I did their work for them. They hadn’t even started on Friday, so I took the liberty of being responsible for them. Sometimes it’s hard to think that they’re going to be adults within the next year. Everyone grows up at different rates I guess. My senior friend from last year grew up way faster than the rest of his grade. By the time he left high school, he was already planning out his success in Vegas with his new las vegas special use permit business. After that, I was too brain dead to work and I knew I would be making mistakes so it would be a waste of my boss’s money to pay me for working then.

I still managed to call Steph before sleeping, and we stayed on Skype while we slept. The call made it to 17 hours, so it looked like we were talking for 17 hours straight. One time I made it to 23 hours with my cousin gabe, but that’s because it was on a facebook messenger group chat where you can drop in and out of a call as long as there’s one person still remaining in the call. Messenger is probably the worst calling app I’ve ever used, though. It will always find a way to lag and buffer so you can never understand what everyone is saying. I keep seeing ads for google duo online, so maybe I’ll have to check it out.

Local Business Marketing is Easier Than Ever Online

Everyone keeps thinking that they need some way to trick the search engines into loving them.  Although being ‘loved’ by the big G is important, more important is that when you’re found, you’re found for the right reason and that those that find you – were actually looking for YOU.

Let me explain.  I have a client in Las Vegas that was getting 18k visitors per month to their plumbing site.  But the phone was not ringing.  So, when I consulted with them, I found that their company name contained the phrase ‘Canyon Ranch’.  The problem turned out to be that they were being related to Canyon Ranch Casino.  So, the visitors to their website were dulps that were not looking for a plumber, but actually looking for a casino.

This had a disastrous effect for a couple reasons. First, now the plumbing company was being categorized by the big G as a casino instead of a plumber.  Second, the incredible bounce rate of 99% was wrecking their online reputation and driving them into virtual internet obscurity.

It’s really hard to make money online if you’re caught in internet obscurity.  My adage on that is simple, “the best place to hide a dead body is page 2 of Google Search results.”

So, I don’t want to be negative.  I really am posting this to let you know that you can get business to your website without doing the ‘Google Dance’.  Simply create good content and get a few backlinks to your content.  If you do this well, local search results will treat you kindly.

The big challenge becomes – how to get great backlinks for your local business.

First, I guess I should explain what I consider to be a ‘good backlink’.  It should be a backlink from an influential site that is topically relevant or location relevant.

  • Topically relevant – from a site that is on the same topic as your site.  So, for a heating and cooling repair company, HVAC-TALK.com would be relevant.
  • Location relevant – from a site that is local to your business.  So, the Reno Chamber of Commerce would be extremely relevant to a plumber in Reno.

In both cases, not only relevant is important, but also high traffic cost, high trust flow is also important.

High Traffic Cost – this is a fun one to explain, but the more authority and traffic a site has, the more it would cost to pay for the same amount of traffic.  A great tool for measuring this is SEMrush.  They calculate the traffic cost for any domain.  If you have a site where you can get a backlink and their traffic cost is over $1,000, it is probably a decent link to have.  I have a few sites that I create links with that have traffic costs of $250,000.  That’s huge.

Trust Flow – now this one is tough to explain too.  Trust flow is weighed against Citation Flow.  If you have high numbers for both, Google will think that you have audience and trust.  That’s a good thing.  But if you have a high citation flow and a low trust flow, they will judge you as a weak site.  My plumbing company client had a TF/CF of 2/38 when we first started working on his site.  If you take 2 and divide it by 38, you get .052.  That is terrible.  You really want a ratio of over .7 .  Now we have it at 32/23 . So our ratio is 1.39 . That, my friends, is off the hook!

So, go forth and do two things well:

  • Have good content on your site.
  • Have great backlinks to your site.

The big G will reward you.

Bottle Shock

I had some friends get together to see an old favorite movie “The Year of the Comet”.  It’s a great movie for scenery and the premise of the movie is a little silly, but overall, I like it.

But that brought up the subject of the movie “Bottle Shock”.  Bottle Shock is a fantastic movie filmed in the last 10 years, but it’s about the 1976 blind wine tasting in Paris, France where they would include Napa California wines to compete.

The movie is based on the true story and only slightly embellished the story.  It’s an amusing story.  And I truly enjoyed it.

bottle-shock-dvdAt one point in the movie, there is a beautiful young woman that is an unpaid intern at Chateau Montelena and she’s spray washing the grape pressing equipment.  Meanwhile, all the male employees are sitting there eating their lunches and just watching her as she gets soaking wet while pressure washing the hardware.  It was quite a great scene.

So, Maybe I need to hire a beautiful young blonde to do hood cleaning with me. Not so much for me to look at, but from a marketing standpoint, it might help to amuse some of my Denver clients while we’re performing their hood cleaning.

Sexist?  Yeah, probably. But really, does it matter.  In America, they use sexuality and beauty to sell nearly everything.  Even in this cute little movie, the trailer contains hot shots of the buxom beauty cleaning the equipment. They use images of beautiful women to sell BEER.  Beer?  What does a beautiful woman have to do with a beverage like beer?

bottle-shock-movie-posterSo, why not for hood cleaning in Denver?  A beautiful assistant to help me clean restaurant hoods?

Anyway, I slipped away from my movie review and into a conversation about hood cleaning.  That’s crazy.  So let me just wrap this up with this – Bottle Shock is a very fun movie and you should grab it, open some wine, and enjoy.

Why Dogs are Better Than Cats

It’s pretty obvious that dogs are better than cats for an infinite number of reasons!  You don’t need a blog post to prove this, but I’m going to give you one anyways. Here are my top reasons why dogs are obviously better than cats:

Your dog actually loves you… no matter what

You dog is always excited to see you. You can leave for a couple hours, and they will act like it’s Christmas morning when you get back. You can leave for five minutes, and they will act like it’s Christmas morning when you get back. You can give them a belly rub, or don’t, and they will still love you with all of their heart. Your cat, on the other hand, doesn’t give a crap if you’re home or not… as long as you leave food and a clean litter box. They might want belly rubs one second, but the next second, their claws are inside of your arm. How dare you run their belly, human! I bet your dog has never done that during a belly rub… just sayin’…

They will protect you

Dogs will do anything for their owners, including protect them. A dog will warn you when an intruder is at your door. They will alert you when that awful mailman is near the house, again. They will tell you if there are scary fireworks outside! They just want you to know, so that you can be safe! Cats? They don’t alert you about anything… unless there food bowl is empty.

You don’t need a garbage disposal if you have a dog

Leftovers down the garbage disposal? Only if you are a cat-only family… With dogs, they are more than happy to clear your plate for you. Cat families find themselves needing Sacramento restaurant hood cleaners more often than dog families – this is a proven fact. (Okay, maybe not “proven fact” but it’s probably true.) Dogs are happy to take this burden off of their owners – especially on meatloaf night.

Dogs will do anything for you

As a stupid human, we are always accidentally throwing tennis balls! Your cat will sit back and laugh at you and wish you luck. Your dog will ALWAYS bring that ball back to you. Even when your dog thinks he can’t move another inch and is panting SO hard, he will still go get that ball you accidentally threw and bring it back to you. This is just one of the many things your dog does to help you, their human. Name one thing cats to do help you; knock your glass of water off the table? Stand on your face while you sleep? Beg for attention, than run away like you are about to beat them when you lean down to give them a pat on the back? Nuff said.

With all of these straight facts proving that dogs are better, I think it’s only fair to say one reason cats are okay. That reason is… Socks. Put some socks on your cat, and you have at least ten minutes of pure entertainment!
